Local does not help if you cannot speak
Superwhisper runs its models on your machine, so the audio stays with you. On privacy it beats us outright: our autocomplete is on-device too, but replies and rewriting are cloud calls, and that text leaves your Mac.
What it does not change is that you still have to say the words. A perfectly private dictation app is just as unusable in a quiet office as a cloud one.
FlowIn works the other way round. You keep typing, you type less of it, and nothing has to be said out loud for it to work.
Where Superwhisper is the better choice
It is the stricter privacy answer. Transcription runs on your machine with no connection needed. FlowIn matches that for autocomplete only. Replies and rewriting are cloud calls, so if the requirement is that nothing ever leaves the Mac, Superwhisper covers more of the job than we do.
It works with your hands off the keyboard. FlowIn reduces how much you type. You are still typing. If that is the constraint, dictation is the right tool.

- Not a like-for-like one. Superwhisper turns speech into text; FlowIn predicts the text you are already typing and drafts replies from what is on your screen. They solve the same job, getting words down faster, by opposite routes. Nothing in FlowIn transcribes audio.
- Superwhisper runs locally. Does FlowIn?
- Partly, and it is worth being exact. Autocomplete can run on a model on your own Mac with nothing transmitted. Drafting a reply and rewriting text run on a cloud model, so that text is sent, used to produce the answer, and not retained unless you opt in. On the strict never-leaves-the-device test, Superwhisper covers more than we do.
- So why would I use FlowIn instead?
- Because local transcription is still transcription. You have to talk. In an open office, on a call, or anywhere with someone else in earshot, the privacy of the model is beside the point, because you were never going to say the words in the first place.
- Does FlowIn work offline?
- Autocomplete does, on the on-device model, so your sentences keep getting finished with the wifi off. Reply drafting and rewriting need a connection.
